Kho Mường: A Remote Thanh Hoa Village Blossoming Through Community Tourism

Nestled amidst verdant valleys and towering mountains in Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam, the remote village of Kho Mường is emerging as a unique destination on the country’s community tourism map. This unspoiled haven, characterized by its breathtaking scenery, vibrant local culture, and welcoming homestays, is attracting increasing numbers of adventurous travelers seeking authentic experiences.

A Breathtaking Natural Landscape

The journey to Kho Mường is an adventure in itself. The winding mountain road, with sheer cliffs on one side and a dizzying drop on the other, tests the intrepid traveler. However, the reward is a panorama that leaves visitors speechless. From a vantage point, the small village sits serenely amidst rice paddies, cornfields, and cassava plantations, dotted with traditional stilt houses characteristic of the Thai ethnic minority.

The air is refreshingly clean and cool year-round. On sunny days, sunlight filters through the leaves, casting a golden glow across the valley, creating a scene reminiscent of a painted landscape.

A particular highlight is Kho Mường Cave (also known as Dơi Cave), a 2.5-kilometer-long cavern adorned with breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, sculpted by nature over millions of years. The cave remains largely untouched, offering a pristine experience ideal for those passionate about geology and natural wonders. It stands as a testament to the raw, untamed beauty of the region, far from the commercialization that often plagues tourist attractions.

Beyond the natural splendor, visitors can immerse themselves in the local culture through authentic cuisine, traditional Thai performances, and captivating folklore, shared by villagers with a palpable pride and affection for their homeland. These experiences offer a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Thai traditions, providing a deeper understanding of their way of life.

Community Tourism: A Sustainable Path for Kho Mường’s Thai People

Kho Mường’s transformation is a remarkable story of community resilience. Once a poverty-stricken village, forcing many residents to seek work elsewhere, it is now experiencing a revival thanks to community tourism. About a decade ago, recognizing the potential of their unique location and cultural heritage, several families pioneered a community tourism model, adapting lessons learned from other successful initiatives.

Villagers underwent training in cooking, English conversation, and transforming their homes into simple yet clean and comfortable homestays. Today, nearly 10 households participate in the tourism sector, with others actively renovating and building to join this burgeoning ecosystem. This collaborative effort underscores the community’s commitment to sustainable growth and preservation of their cultural identity.

One such pioneer, 74-year-old Mr. Hà Đình Nếch, a homestay owner from the early days of the initiative, shared his perspective: “Tourism has allowed people to stay in their homeland and achieve stable incomes. More importantly, we contribute to preserving our own culture.”

Village chief Hà Văn Thào noted that Kho Mường has 62 households, all of whom are of Thai ethnicity. The growth of tourism has not only lifted many families out of poverty but also created jobs for dozens of locals. Many young people have found stable employment as motorbike taxi drivers, tour guides, and cooks, earning monthly salaries ranging from 4 to 5 million Vietnamese Dong (approximately $170 to $210 USD). This economic empowerment is a direct result of the sustained effort and focus on community-driven tourism.

Preserving Heritage Through Traditional Stilt Houses

A defining characteristic of Kho Mường is its steadfast preservation of traditional culture. The original stilt houses, traditional costumes, festivals, ancestral rituals, and the warm hospitality extended to visitors are integral parts of everyday life. This commitment to authenticity is the cornerstone of its appeal.

Kho Mường’s approach prioritizes quality over quantity in tourism development. It’s not just about providing a place to “rest”; it’s about offering visitors a chance to “stay”—to live, eat, and experience life alongside the community. This immersion fosters genuine cultural exchange and strengthens the bond between visitors and hosts. The village emphasizes sustainable practices, ensuring that tourism benefits the community without compromising its cultural heritage or environmental integrity. This commitment enhances the uniqueness of the destination and provides a richer, more meaningful experience for visitors. The integrated approach to cultural preservation and tourism has proven to be a sustainable and effective model for rural development. The success of Kho Mường serves as an inspiring example for other communities seeking to leverage their unique assets for economic growth while safeguarding their cultural heritage. The careful balance between preservation and development ensures that Kho Mường’s authentic charm continues to attract visitors seeking an enriching and memorable travel experience. Further growth will undoubtedly require continued investment in infrastructure, training, and marketing, while upholding the core principles of community-based tourism that have been so instrumental in its success. The future of Kho Mường holds immense potential, provided that the delicate balance between economic progress and the preservation of its unique heritage is maintained.

The success of Kho Mường demonstrates the transformative power of community-based tourism in preserving cultural heritage and fostering sustainable economic growth in rural Vietnam.
