Mekong Delta Tourism Booms, Poised for Further Growth

The Mekong Delta region in Vietnam is experiencing a surge in tourism, driven by the diversification of tourism products and the promotion of its unique natural landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich cultural heritage. The first half of 2025 saw impressive results, with several provinces leveraging their natural and cultural resources to offer unique experiences unavailable elsewhere. This success is paving the way for even greater development, particularly with upcoming administrative mergers set to reshape the region’s tourism landscape.

Record-Breaking Tourist Numbers and Revenue

The first six months of 2025 witnessed a remarkable influx of tourists to the Mekong Delta. Kiên Giang province, home to the renowned Phú Quốc island, welcomed over 7 million visitors, with Phú Quốc alone attracting more than 4.4 million. This resulted in tourism revenue nearing VND 21,600 billion (approximately $918 million USD, based on an approximate exchange rate of VND 23,500 to 1 USD), a staggering increase of over 92% compared to the same period in 2024. Popular attractions included the beaches and islands of Phú Quốc and Hà Tiên, the U Minh Thượng National Park, and historical and cultural sites in Rạch Giá city and Hòn Đất and Kiên Lương districts.

Bến Tre province also reported significant growth, attracting over 1.5 million tourists, a nearly 19% increase compared to the first half of 2024. This success was fueled by historical and cultural sites, eco-tourism linked to fruit orchards, and traditional craft villages producing specialties like puffed rice cakes and coconut candy. Coastal areas like Ba Tri and Thạnh Phú also experienced a boost in visitor numbers.

Đồng Tháp province, known for its lotus flowers, saw an estimated 2.6 million tourists in the first half of 2025, generating an estimated VND 1,400 billion (approximately $59.6 million USD) in tourism revenue—a more than 27% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Over 100 community-based tourism sites, showcasing agriculture, handicrafts, and historical and cultural relics, contributed to this success. Popular tours highlighted the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, including experiences like local markets, sunrise and sunset tours in Tràm Chim National Park, and tours exploring the “love land” of Sa Đéc and the pink lotus fields.

Administrative Mergers: A Catalyst for Growth

The Mekong Delta, like many regions in Vietnam, is undergoing significant administrative changes. Provincial and district-level mergers are scheduled to take effect on July 1st, 2025. This restructuring is anticipated to significantly impact the region’s tourism sector.

Hà Văn Siêu, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, views the consolidation as a catalyst for transformation, allowing for greater adaptability and unlocking new potential for the tourism industry. The merger of Đồng Tháp and Tiền Giang provinces into the new Đồng Tháp province is expected to create new opportunities for tourism development. Building on the ecological and scenic advantages of the Đồng Tháp Mười region, the new province aims to strengthen its tourism brand by focusing on local cultural identity. This will involve enhancing the quality of eco-tourism, agritourism, rural tourism, handicraft experiences, culinary tourism, and waterway tourism, all in line with sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

Similarly, the merger of Kiên Giang and An Giang provinces into the new An Giang province is expected to create new opportunities for tourism. Kiên Giang province’s leadership envisions developing Phú Quốc into a high-quality eco-tourism and beach destination of national and international standing. This will involve expanding and improving tourism routes to fully leverage the area’s diverse resources, ranging from beaches and islands to historical sites, cultural and spiritual landmarks, traditional craft villages, and the unique culture of the local communities.

Enhancing Tourism Quality and Promoting Regional Destinations

The Mekong Delta Tourism Association is actively working to elevate the region’s tourism offerings. The association recently conducted surveys and assessments to recognize and re-recognize outstanding tourism destinations and products in the region. This initiative aims to support local areas in developing and promoting high-quality tourism products and attractions that reflect the area’s unique historical, cultural, and natural characteristics. The goal is to enhance the appeal of the Mekong Delta, a key tourism region in Vietnam.

Ngã Bảy City: A Unique Mekong Delta Destination

Ngã Bảy city, located in Hậu Giang province, stands out as a significant hub in the Mekong Delta. Its strategic location, where seven canals converge, makes it a crucial waterway transportation center for the region. This unique geographical position offers compelling opportunities for developing specialized tourism products centered around waterway-based activities and experiences. This is further enhanced by the region’s agricultural heritage, offering opportunities to link tourism with agricultural production and related craft industries.

The Future of Mekong Delta Tourism

The Mekong Delta’s tourism sector is experiencing a period of remarkable growth, driven by the diversification of tourism products and the strategic leveraging of the region’s unique characteristics. The impending administrative mergers are expected to further accelerate this development, leading to increased collaboration, enhanced infrastructure, and the creation of new tourism opportunities. The focus on sustainable and eco-friendly practices, combined with the promotion of high-quality tourism experiences, positions the Mekong Delta as a premier destination for both domestic and international visitors. The continued investment in infrastructure, coupled with strategic marketing and development, promises to solidify the Mekong Delta’s position as a leading tourism hub in Vietnam and beyond.
