Despite being traditionally a low season, Vietnam welcomed a record-breaking 1.668 million international tourists in August 2025, solidifying its position as a global tourism hotspot. This surge, particularly the impressive revenue growth in Ho Chi Minh City, paints a vibrant picture of the country’s tourism recovery.
Record-Breaking Tourist Arrivals Fuel Economic Growth

According to the General Statistics Office, Vietnam received nearly 14 million international visitors in the first eight months of 2025, a remarkable 21.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024. August alone saw 1.668 million arrivals, a 16.5% year-on-year increase—a significant achievement considering August is typically a low season for international tourism. This robust growth signals a strong rebound for the Vietnamese tourism sector, exceeding expectations amidst global economic uncertainties.
Asian Markets Dominate, with Russia Showing Explosive Growth

China and South Korea continue to be Vietnam’s largest source markets, contributing almost half of all international arrivals. China took the lead with over 3.5 million visitors (25.4%), followed by South Korea with 2.9 million (20.9%). Importantly, key markets showed consistent growth, with China experiencing a substantial 44.3% increase, India a 42.2% rise, and Cambodia a 50.7% jump. However, the most dramatic surge came from Russia, with an astonishing 164.9% increase in tourist arrivals. This success is attributed to effective promotional campaigns implemented by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and local authorities.
European Markets Show Promise Despite Distance
Despite geographical distance, key European markets also demonstrated positive trends. The United Kingdom saw a 21.8% increase in tourist arrivals, France a 22.6% rise, and Germany a 17.9% increase. Vietnam’s recent expansion of its visa exemption policy to include 12 European countries is expected to further propel growth in this market, opening up new avenues for tourism development and cooperation.
Ho Chi Minh City Leads the Way, Driving National Growth
As Vietnam’s largest tourism hub, Ho Chi Minh City continues to play a pivotal role in the nation’s tourism success. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Tourism, the city welcomed nearly 5.2 million international visitors in the first eight months of 2025, representing a near 50% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Domestic tourism also thrived, with over 25 million domestic visitors, a 7.5% increase year-on-year.
This surge in tourism translated into significant economic gains. Total tourism revenue in Ho Chi Minh City reached 161,887 billion VND (approximately $6.9 billion USD, based on an assumed exchange rate—the actual figure should be verified with current exchange rates), a 31.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024, and reaching 62.3% of the city’s 2025 target. This robust performance underscores the city’s strong tourism recovery and its significant contribution to the overall economic landscape.
Strategic Tourism Product Development Fuels Growth
Ho Chi Minh City is actively enhancing its tourism offerings, focusing on interconnected experiences. The city is promoting themed itineraries such as the “From City to River to Sea” journey and the “Maritime Culture” series. Specialized tourism products, including culinary tourism, night tourism, and village tourism, are being actively developed to cater to personalized traveler experiences. These initiatives aim to diversify the tourism offerings, attract a wider range of tourists and enhance the overall visitor experience. The focus on curated experiences positions Ho Chi Minh City as a dynamic and engaging destination, driving further growth in the tourism sector. This strategic approach, coupled with the city’s existing infrastructure and attractions, positions Ho Chi Minh City for continued success in the global tourism market.
The record-breaking tourist arrivals in Vietnam during August 2025, particularly the exceptional performance of Ho Chi Minh City, highlight the nation’s thriving tourism sector and its significant contribution to the national economy.
