Phu Quoc island, Vietnam’s largest island and a renowned tourist destination, is gearing up to host the 2027 APEC Summit. This prestigious event presents a unique opportunity for Phu Quoc to solidify its position on the global tourism map, attracting significant investment and driving sustainable development across its infrastructure, urban planning, and governance. The event’s importance extends far beyond Phu Quoc, impacting the entire Mekong Delta region and Vietnam as a whole, serving as a platform to showcase the nation’s dynamism, modernization, and hospitality to the world.
A City-Wide Effort to Enhance Phu Quoc’s Image

In anticipation of the APEC summit, Phu Quoc city is actively engaging its residents and businesses in a comprehensive campaign to transform the island into a cleaner, greener, and more civilized environment. A key initiative is the “Each Phu Quoc Citizen is a Tourism Ambassador” campaign, aiming to foster a culture of hospitality and responsibility among the local population. The city’s strategic vision focuses on positioning Phu Quoc as a premier high-quality eco-tourism and marine destination, establishing its place on the national and international stage and connecting it to major economic centers globally.
Tourism Boom Fuels Expectations for APEC

Phu Quoc’s tourism sector has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. In the first six months of 2025 alone, the island welcomed over 4.4 million visitors, including a significant surge in international tourists, reaching 881,990. This impressive tourist influx generated approximately VND 21,588 billion (approximately USD 910 million) in tourism revenue, marking a substantial 92.6% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The diversity of visitors is striking, with tourists from across Asia participating in various activities, including sightseeing, relaxation, and explorations of the island’s natural beauty, vibrant culture, and diverse gastronomy.
China’s Growing Interest in Phu Quoc Tourism
One particular market demonstrating explosive growth is China. With over 140,000 Chinese tourists visiting in the first half of 2025, this number is projected to climb even higher fueled by the widespread sharing of Phu Quoc’s stunning imagery on Chinese social media platforms. Ms. Huang Xin Yi, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at LHQT Shanghai Travel Worry Free, highlighted China’s substantial tourism market and its diverse needs, emphasizing Phu Quoc’s appeal as a top destination. She noted that while Southeast Asia offers various island and beach destinations, Phu Quoc’s unique charm holds a particular allure for Chinese tourists.
This positive trend is echoed by Mr. Ha Tuan Minh, Director of Vietnam Winner Phu Quoc International Travel Company. He observed a highly positive response to promotional videos showcasing Phu Quoc’s beauty on Chinese social media platforms. His company anticipates welcoming over 1,000 Chinese tourists to Phu Quoc in June and July 2025 alone.
From 586,000 to Nearly 6 Million: Phu Quoc’s Meteoric Rise
Le Quoc Anh, Secretary of the Phu Quoc City Party Committee, emphasized the island’s remarkable progress in establishing itself as a leading tourism hotspot in Vietnam. He highlighted the dramatic transformation in just a decade: from a destination with no 5-star hotels and approximately 586,000 visitors in 2014 to nearly 6 million visitors in 2024, with close to 1 million international arrivals. This exceptional growth, he explained, is not merely a testament to Phu Quoc’s inherent attractiveness but also a reflection of the local government’s strategic planning, the valuable contributions of investors, and the collaborative spirit of the business community.
Phu Quoc: A Unique Destination in Southeast Asia
Phu Quoc’s position among the top 10 islands in Asia underscores its exceptional appeal. As Vietnam’s largest island, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and modern amenities that sets it apart from other Southeast Asian island destinations. Its pristine beaches, such as Bai Sao, Bai Truong, and Bai Khem, featuring soft white sand and crystal-clear waters, attract visitors worldwide. The island’s stunning natural landscape further encompasses vast coral reefs, 99 rolling hills, and sprawling virgin forests, creating a breathtaking backdrop for leisure and exploration.
Diverse Accommodation and Entertainment Options
Phu Quoc provides diverse accommodations catering to a wide range of preferences and budgets, from luxurious 4- and 5-star resorts and hotels to more budget-friendly guesthouses and bungalows. A plethora of modern entertainment options are available, offering exciting experiences for every visitor. The Phu Quoc Safari, Vietnam’s largest semi-wild animal conservation park, allows visitors to interact with diverse rare and precious wildlife. The Hòn Thơm cable car system, the world’s longest three-rope cable car crossing the sea, provides tourists with a breathtaking panoramic view of the magnificent untouched natural scenery. Beyond these attractions, Phu Quoc offers a wealth of additional experiences, including marine exploration activities and distinctive culinary treats.
The synergistic blend of natural beauty, modern entertainment, and diverse hospitality contributes significantly to the island’s growing allure, attracting a substantial influx of tourists seeking enriching and memorable experiences.
